I am working on a 2d MMO using Impact and websockets. First Simple test.

I would love to see how you have implemented websockets. Looks like a great start.

1 decade ago by Graphikos

Looking good. Our MMO we are attaching it to a RedDwarf Server.

I am actually writing a tutorial on Impact and Node/Socket.io right now. First 2 videos go up today hopefully.

Oh I will have to read into RedDwarf, thanks for the link!

That's awesome. Can't wait to see your tutorials.

What would be really awesome, is if you would leave a blank version of your base mmo to help the rest of us interested in this sort of game get a head start. Kind of like an MMO Engine for Impact. Hell, I'd even pay for that pleasure ;)

+1 for that.

And a new question: what, if any, mechanism/platform would you use if you wanted to put code (or code collections/libraries) up for sale?

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

hmm now that is an interesting idea. I have been working on a MUCH better version that has little footprint on the server.

Not sure what you mean by mechanism/platform. So far it is Impact/Javascript with websockets. I have tested this on a widows phone and it works as well.

1 decade ago by Nic

Pleeeeaaaase do it Vallhalla! It would be marvelous. Also I love too videos.

1 decade ago by Xaan

And also please continue your series of tutorials! :) I'm really looking forward to see how you're going to handle collisions with the new architecture you've outlined in your latest video.

1 decade ago by Nic

Yeah, you seriously sold this product for them with your series of videos. I'm following them right now, but I'm kind of bummed to know you've already discovered a more efficient way of doing things.

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

My next video couple of videos are on the way. I have been doing some job hunting here lately looking to change careers so it has been a bit hectic for me.

1 decade ago by alexandre

Not sure what you mean by mechanism/platform.

By that I meant code vending platform, such as binpress and others.

EDIT
While on this subject, I read this interesting post about the caveats of source code selling.

1 decade ago by Nic

Awesome Valhalla, don't give up on it. There's a lot of us depending on your work.

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

I am not selling anything. I have been doing free tutorials and been giving away my games for free for 2 years now all for the sake of helping more people able to make their games and I don't intend to change that. All of my source and tutorials will be free. You will just have to give me time to get it all together. I hope to have the tutorials up tomorrow.

1 decade ago by Xaan

That's awesome vallhalla.
Good luck with the career change!

1 decade ago by alexandre

All of my source and tutorials will be free.

@hallsofvallhalla
The question (to sell or not to sell) came from someone (me) who is self-employed as a gamedev, i.e., operates under a different set of constraints than you do. It's good that you give code away for free (so do I; see other posts) but bills will have to be paid regardless of income source.

But like everyone else on this thread, I sure am glad that you are doing this and giving it away for free. Keep up the good and generous work.

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

I did not mean that in a disrespectful way. Selling source, aps, tutorials is not a bad thing at all and the work put in should be paid for. I wish I could make a living selling software, source, tutorials ect.. and I respect and envy anyone who does. I think it would be more trouble for me to sell something like this.

Then allow us to donate. I want you to continue your work and am grateful you are doing this out of your niceness of your heart.

I will check tomorrow for your new uploads.

We're a small company, starting game dev on the side (yeah, yeah, I know, it's not the best way to go but we are kind of used to wrong time sharing ^^) and we've done nice plugins that we should either publish here or sell or accept donations (gonna work on that this summer).
Any penny helps!

Anyway, where is this donate button ? :)

1 decade ago by TylerAppmobi

I'd say kickstarter would be the best venue for donations, I know I'd donate :D

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

my web community at indie-resource has a donate button on the page

http://indie-resource.com/

I would do kickstarter but would not know what price to start with and would have to reach a goal and all that mess.

Thanks!

Consider this etiquette before going after "donations".

http://www.learn-cocos2d.com/2012/03/10-golden-rules-donate-button/

If you don’t need donations, don’t ask for them.

If you own a business, don’t ask for donations for anything in the same business domain, period.

If you greatly benefit from your free work in other ways (traffic, marketing, paid work, etc.), stop accepting donations.

If you can’t explain exactly how donations help your work, don’t even imply that they do.

If you just want to earn some money, sell something. Anything.

If receiving money is a source of motivation for you, donations will be counterproductive.

If you want your work to be appreciated, accept physical gifts, not monetary donations.

Don’t beg for donations and don’t appeal to your user’s bad conscience. No free project that deserves to survive needs money that badly.

Don’t expect or demand anyone to donate, ever. Not even Mr./Ms. Got-Rich-From-Your-Work. You decided to give your stuff away for free, remember?

Every new Donate button makes all others a little less attractive, and less beneficial overall. The purpose of your Donate button should far outweigh its detrimental effect on others.

1 decade ago by Nic

He didn't beg. I was offering... And I don't see an issue with any of that...

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

ouch, even when I try to be nice and say it is free I get attacked. Yikes. Looks like I hit a different kind of button.

I never asked anyone to donate. Please read the entire thread first. By all means do not donate. I turned down the offer to sell the stuff.

Frankly though as a small backlash I have donated more games, tutorials, help, domains, free hosting, web forums, ect.. than most people have to give. If anyone has the right to ask for donations it would be me. I have 100+ video tutorials that have spawned hundreds of games and helped people make their own games and guess how much i have received from that donate button?

$10!

I used that money to buy a better microphone for more tutorials. So don't preach to me about "begging" for donations.

I do however understand where you are coming from as I get sick to my stomach when I see some off the stuff people ask money for.

1 decade ago by Nic

Well, I'm going to change that. I really appreciate what you're doing, please keep up the good work. I'm learning all of this for the first time, but I don't think I would have purchased the engine or even bothered with any of this if I hadn't seen your video tutorials.

Thank you, I'm sending the donation now.

1 decade ago by stahlmanDesign

I didn't mean to be critical of anyone personally, certainly not Vallhalla. I just saw this thread was talking about donations, so I just chimed in with a post I found on the subject. It was a just a passing thought really, not even a strong opinion. I'm grateful for your videos and source code. Thank you.

1 decade ago by hallsofvallhalla

all good my friend. No big deal. I want to thank everyone that donated. My next video is up and I should have 2 more up tomorrow. There are done just need to get them up-loaded.
