I worked on this for a few weeks before I lost focus and started tinkering with different things. I hate to let it go to complete waste, so I figure I'll share what I've done here. One day I may or may not pick it up. The gravity is a little too light and the upgrade system (available after dieing) is unbalanced.

Made with all opensource/free sounds and graphics, except the eyeball monsters. I drew that :)

Controls:
Left/Right: A/D
Jump: W
Aim: Mouse
Fire: Left Mouse Click

Impact can be a lot of fun.

I like the particles that erupt when a monster dies. Might a suggest a period of invincibility after you jump on spikes so you can have a chance to get out of there? I found myself in a damage loop because I couldn't get out of some spikes. I know I suck lol.

Hope you get your focus back.
