This game was made in about 8 hours. The idea came at 4 p.m. after university students on strike throughout the province allegedly (now confirmed) put thousands of grasshoppers in a university that was not on strike. Exterminators had to come and clean up.

So for a while I've been wanting to make mini games about news or local events. It's a way that people can have fun with it, and even if the game is not the best ever, it's got a local angle, and can propagate on Facebook etc. which brings the website hits.

So here's the game (scroll down the page)
EDIT: direct link

Remember, 8 hours of work, so it's basically a modified Jump N' Run with my ladders entity.

Completed in 8 minutes or so. 8 hours from start to finish to make this game is very impressive, jump n'run derivative or not. Proves that we can do LD-like events.

Things I liked:
- grasshopper count gives one a clear motivator
- platforms or elevators, please (but 8 hours... I know)
- traps would be nice (a boxful of hoppers dropped on you) (but 8 hours...)

Things I would have preferred:
- count does not go down despite the killing of hoppers, leading me to believe that there is a nest somewhere where they are busy reproducing. But it would have been nicer to see the numbers go down as we kill them, and then go back up while we are exploring. Would give a sense of time pressure.

Problems:
- getting stuck on ladders quite a bit
- an impression of sluggish performance in Chrome; blame my 100 open Chrome tabs for that, but I still wonder if optimizations could have been done. Did you pre-render the map?

Nice job.

Inspired,
Alex
