Not sure where this belongs so I thought I would put it here in the engine section.

I am not new to javascript but I am also not super advanced with it or programming in general. I was a web design major in college (think front-end really as it was not just design. more like half and half). I work mostly on the front end of the web with html, css, jquery, some php, etc and do not do anything super complicated or fancy. I muddled through setting up controls and behaviors for a beat em up game scene in college once (using flash back in 2.0 days) but I mostly have no real practical experience with game programming with javasctipt.

I do happen to own the oreilly book for impact and was wondering if between that any any tutorials i could find online, if I, a beginner in many ways, would be able to actually build a game with impact? Or, should I move on over and try something like construct2 which would hold my hand more, so to speak.

I'm about at your same level of experience and let me tell you impact is perfect for guys like us. There are so many useful features and tons of great plugins. Not to mention a good community as well. Plus, putting down 100 bucks may seem like a lot now, but it's just the right amount of investment to motivate you to see your product through. Whether or not you actually bring a game to market, what you learn will be substantial. Look at some of the game examples and see if what you have in mind is something along those lines. I cannot speak highly enough of impact. Dominic has done such a great job.

It's worth it.

The documentation is rock solid, the code properly commented, and the community is awesome. I tried to build my own framework for Bacon Game Jam (because I couldn't use Impact due to the rules), and oh boy did I miss it.

With the same amount of effor I put into my malformed piece of FrankenFOSS, I could have taken a game to market using Impact.
