Is there a way to make an entity glow, or flash? Like some kind of back light effect? I've not run across anything in the forums, but if i did miss something i'd love to be pointed in the right direction.

Setup an animation sheet and animate your own flash. Beyond that there isn't anything really built in.

Well you can always use native canvas effects like radial blur but I would go with graphikos answer just do your anim sheet and give it backlight through photoshop effects.
