Hi,

I have an idea for a 2d side-scrolling game and I'm thinking of doing it in HTML5/JS and Impact. The problem is I do not have any experience in game development at all, only in web development which on the other hand is quite extensive (mostly server-side scripting).

Is this even worth a shot or do I need some general game development knowledge before giving it a try?

The best thing probably is to watch the pong tutorial and see if it makes reasonable sense to you.

I think that if you can do server-side scripting you can definitely make games. Of course you would probably have to work up to a 2d scroller game, starting with something much more basic to get your feet wet. The best thing about learning game development in particular is that it is a great deal of fun. If I were to recommend a complete noob to game development, I would recommend Impact.

I'm in the same boat as you Kxen, and I must say Impact and Javascript has been by far the easiest programing related thing I've ever tried to learn, and I've tried quite a few of the other options that are out there.

I say go for it and buy Impact. If you find it's not for you, then you can always ask for a refund.
